Overseas Workshop FAQ's

What kind of photography experience do I need?
We often have a wide range of skill levels from beginner to pro, which is one reason we keep our groups very small, so everyone gets individual attention. The only thing we ask is that you have a basic working knowledge of your camera by the time you come on our trip. You also need the desire to shoot great photographs! If you’re a beginner we offer a Digital Photo Basics class you can take before the workshop (see our workshop schedule.)
What kind of camera do I need?
Generally speaking, we recommend using a single lens reflex (SLR) with interchangeable lenses because of its versatility. We do not require it however, and if you do not have an SLR, a camera with settings to override fully automatic is best. If you have any questions about this feel free to contact us.
What if I shoot film?
Shooting film is your choice and we will make every effort to arrange developing at least once during the trip. The primary advantage if you choose to use digital is immediate feedback during our classroom sessions. We review and critique images at every classroom session, which offers you the opportunity to improve progressively throughout the trip. However, if you shoot film you will still learn from other workshop members' image reviews and critiques.
What kind of camera equipment do I need to bring?
Besides a camera, a tripod is a must, a comfortable camera bag or pack, camera battery charger with extra batteries, and plenty of memory cards or film. Once you are registered, Joel will send out a more complete list about a month before departure, but these are the basic items you'll need.
I have a friend/spouse/partner who would like to join me on the trip, will there be things for him/her to do?
Travel companions who are not photographers are ABSOLUTELY welcome on our overseas trips. We design our overseas workshops as a cultural tour with activities for everyone to enjoy. Travel companions can forego the classroom time (approximately 1-2 hours daily), as well as some of our early days when we shoot sunrise. Our trips are relaxed and flexible so we are able to accommodate everyone. Because we include so many services- hotel, meals, in-country transportation, activities, etc.- the price remains the same for all participants, whether or not they attend classroom sessions.
I would like to spend more than 1 week in Europe, can you help me with reservations, etc. for time before or after the workshop?
We have a wonderful travel coordinator (Gina) who would be happy to help you with any travel arrangements you need. If you'd like suggestions for places to see/visit, please contact us- we'd be more than happy to give you ideas!
Can you help me with airline reservations?
See above question, Gina is happy to help with airline reservations.
